Barchan Field
CompetitionRiyadh · Al Ahsa · New York2026Installation design
A single triangular unit that repeats until it becomes terrain, travelling from a Riyadh neighbourhood to the edge of the Empty Quarter to New York.

The Logic of the Dune
A barchan dune, built by wind from repeated grains of sand, produces shelter, exposure and places to gather, then moves on. The project follows the same logic: a single tensile fabric unit, fabricated off-site and assembled on site, clusters into passages, shaded thresholds, seating edges and viewpoints, while barely touching the ground.

Three Sites
The Musahama competition asked for three sites: Sedra, a site in Saudi Arabia, and a site anywhere in the world. The system stays; the skin and the scale change. A red mesh for children to climb in Sedra, sky-toned ropes that glow at night at the edge of the Empty Quarter, recycled steel chainmail on the High Line.

An Unprescribed Place
The project does not prescribe what happens where. In Sedra, the same configuration serves a neighbourhood gathering, a pop-up café, a Saturday market or a Ramadan iftar. People define its use by walking, resting, playing and passing through, and the installation arrives, changes and leaves. Its base barely touches the ground, so dismantling it leaves little trace.

Like a dune, it never stays, yet leaves every place with a new way of standing in it.
